Ex-President Frei Ruiz-Tagle’s Brother is a Fugitive in Chile

Francisco Frei, brother of former president Eduardo Frei Ruiz-Tagle (1994-2000), is on Thursday a fugitive from justice in Chile, which convicted him of fraud, misappropriation and forgery, among other crimes.

On March 15, he admitted the crimes committed and was sentenced to five years in prison, but negotiated with the prosecution to obtain probation. The plaintiffs’ lawyers rejected this decision and on Wednesday the Court of Appeals and a Court of the Metropolitan Region ordered that, due to the seriousness of the acts, the guilty must serve the sentence in prison.

Francisco Frei used his brother’s position, first as Senator and then as President of the Republic, and even forged his signature to gain access to bank loans and other benefits. However, when the Investigation Police went to his residence on Thursday to transfer him to jail, they found it empty. His attorney Juan Jose Rondon assured that his client is ‘in a safe place’ and will not give himself up voluntarily.
