HIF Global has announced it has submitted an environmental permit for its Cabo Negro, hydrogen-based eFuels facility in Chile.
The facility will be powered by renewable energy and create an expected 173,600 tonnes a year of eMethanol will be produced, to be converted totally or partially to e-LG and e-gasoline.
e-gasoline is produced via combining green hydrogen and biogenic carbon dioxide (CO2), while e-LG is produced during the conversion of e-methanol to e-gasoline.
HIF’s Cabo Negro facility involves an investment of $830m, and the company will now await an answer from the Environmental Assessment Service (SEA) of the Magallanes Region in southern Chile.
Cesar Norton, HIF Global’s President and CEO, said, “We are taking a substantial step towards making the hydrogen derivatives industry a reality in Chile: this will be the first commercial-scale plant for the production of carbon neutral eFuels at competitive costs.”
Faro del Sur Wind Park will utilise its 384MW of power to power the Cago Negro facility. Once the environmental permit approval is received from SEA, the construction phase will take around 26 months and create 600 jobs.
HIF will source its CO2 for Cabo Negro from biomass conversion, direct air capture, and other industrial sources. The facility will also use desalinated water for the eFuels production process and a recycling system to avoid sea discharge.
Earlier today (October 9), H2 View reported that HIF Global and Empresas GASCO announced the first production of hydrogen-based “carbon neutral liquefied gas” (e-LG) from its Haru Oni facility, also in Chile.
Chile is aiming for 4-5GW of green hydrogen production by 2025, and up to 25GW by 2030. In the past six years, the country has increased generation capacity from solar and wind power sectors, and by 2030 70% of the power grid is expected to be renewable.
