Chile Surprises Puerto Rico in Women’s Basketball

The host nation defeats one of the gold medal favorites in women’s basketball at Santiago 2023.

Chile delivered a major surprise on the first day of women’s basketball at Santiago 2023 by defeating Puerto Rico 86-60 in a match from Group A. Puerto Rico is ranked 12th in the FIBA world rankings, while the hosts are positioned 78th.

Chile’s team dominated the Caribbean squad from start to finish and has now started to dream of a potential medal after beating one of the top contenders in the competition.

“We had been working on this match during the week, and it showed on the scoreboard. We’re going to fight for a medal; we’ll take it one game at a time. Right now, we’re focused on Argentina and Cuba,” said Barbara Cousiño, Chile’s player.

The 26-year-old shooting guard had an inspired afternoon, scoring 13 points, providing seven assists, and grabbing five rebounds. She enjoyed constant support from her family, who never stopped cheering and celebrating the great performance of the home team’s number 10.

Chile’s next game in women’s basketball will be against Argentina on Thursday at 8:00 p.m.

Brazil is the top favorite to win the gold in women’s basketball at Santiago 2023. The Brazilian team is the reigning champion of the FIBA AmeriCup Women 2023, having defeated the United States in the final.
