Chile Makes Winning Debut in Women’s Football at Santiago 2023

Daniela Zamora scored the only goal for La Roja against Paraguay.

Chile’s women’s national team secured an important victory in their debut at the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games. At the Elias Figueroa Stadium in Valparaiso, Daniela Zamora scored the game’s first goal at 25′, giving the local team a 1-0 victory. This win gives them three points in Group A, joining Mexico.

DOMINANT WIN FOR MEXICO

Mexico defeated Jamaica 7-0 in the opening match of the women’s football competition in Valparaiso.

Mexican left-winger Maria Sanchez, who scored a double in the 12′ and 75′, was the most impressive player of the day. The other goal scorers were Karla Nieto at 35′, Kiana Palacios at 42′, Diana Ordoñez at 58′, Alicia Cervantes at 68′ and Veronica Corral from the penalty spot at 58. With this result, Mexico leads Group A by goal difference over Chile.

UNITED STATES RETURNS TO THE PAN AMERICAN GAMES

After a 16-year absence from women’s football at the Pan American Games, the United States returned with an Under-19 team and defeated Bolivia 6-0 in the Group B opening match at the Sausalito Stadium in Viña del Mar.

Ava McDonald was the match’s standout performer, scoring a hat-trick at 4′, 22′ and 68′. Amalia Villarreal scored twice at 19′ and 58′ and Emeri Adames scored the final goal in minute 33.

“This is promising talent for the United States. In the last Pan American Games, we had young players who did well and later became part of the national women’s team. We have a lot of talent and they have a bright future ahead,” said the USA’s coach, Carrie Kveton.

The United States leads Group B with three points and a goal difference of +6.

ARGENTINA DRAWS WITH COSTA RICA

Argentina and Costa Rica played out a 0-0 draw in the headline match of the first day of women’s football in Viña del Mar. Argentina fought tirelessly to take the lead in a game full of missed opportunities but couldn’t capitalize on Costa Rica’s mistakes.

Argentina and Costa Rica share the second spot in Group B, behind the United States and ahead of Bolivia.
