How we report / READER RECORD

Editorial standards

Santiago Chronicle sourcing and publication standards.

Accuracy and sourcing

Reports must be supported by identifiable sources. Ordinary reports require corroboration from independent originating organizations; sensitive claims require authoritative primary evidence and independent confirmation.

Syndicated copies of one report do not count as independent sources. Unresolved contradictions stop publication.

Originality and fairness

We synthesize verified facts and relevant context rather than copying or disguising another publisher’s prose. Headlines must reflect the article, uncertainty must remain visible, and opinion is not presented as fact.

Images and quotations

Images require documented reuse rights and visible credit. We do not invent quotations, eyewitness accounts, interviews, correspondents or access.
