CDC warns of Salmonella outbreak tied to Live It Up Super Greens supplements

Federal health officials are warning consumers not to use certain “super greens” dietary supplement powders after a multistate Salmonella outbreak was linked to the products. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) published an outbreak notice describing illnesses associated with Live It Up Super Greens supplement powders, and said the company initiated a voluntary recall. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) also posted a recall notice and outbreak investigation update with product details and handling guidance.

According to the CDC’s outbreak page, 45 people across 21 states became sick with the same Salmonella strain, and 12 people were hospitalized; no deaths were reported. The CDC said people in the outbreak reported consuming Live It Up Super Greens supplement powder. The agency urged consumers not to eat the recalled powders and to throw them away or return them where purchased, and recommended cleaning items and surfaces that may have contacted the product.

The FDA’s outbreak investigation update identified the recalled product as Live it Up-brand Super Greens dietary supplement powder with expiration dates from 08/2026 to 01/2028, including original and wild berry flavors. The FDA said illnesses began between August 22, 2025 and December 30, 2025, and noted that epidemiological information collected by CDC showed many ill people reported consuming the product. The FDA said it is conducting a traceback investigation and working with state partners to sample products, and warned that additional products may be identified as the investigation continues.

In its recall announcement, the FDA said the manufacturer, Superfoods, Inc. (doing business as Live it Up), recalled products including pouches and stick packs, and noted lots beginning with the letter “A” as part of the affected distribution. The recall notice also said the product was sold nationwide in the U.S., including U.S. territories, and that the company was aware of possible unauthorized third-party distribution through marketplaces such as ebay.com and Walmart.com, in addition to direct sales and Amazon.

Salmonella infection can cause diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps, and can be more dangerous for young children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems. Public health officials typically advise seeking medical care if severe symptoms develop, such as high fever, persistent diarrhea, or signs of dehydration. The CDC and FDA guidance emphasizes sanitation to reduce cross-contamination risks in kitchens and storage areas where powders may have been handled.

The outbreak is a reminder that dietary supplements—often perceived as “clean” or “health” products—can still become contaminated during manufacturing, packaging, or distribution. Regulators are urging consumers to check expiration dates and lot information carefully, dispose of affected products, and monitor official updates as investigators work to determine the contamination source and whether other related items are implicated.
