The United States has officially completed its withdrawal from the World Health Organization (WHO), ending decades of membership and triggering warnings from public health experts about the impact on disease surveillance and global outbreak coordination.
The administration defended the move by citing dissatisfaction with the WHO’s COVID-19 response and governance, while experts cautioned that reduced access to shared data and international coordination could hinder U.S. preparedness for future threats.
WHO leadership said it regrets the decision and indicated the withdrawal notification and related issues will be reviewed at upcoming governing meetings, including the Executive Board session beginning February 2, 2026.
