Ethiopia has declared the end of its first Marburg virus outbreak after 42 days without new confirmed cases. Health officials and the WHO emphasized that sustained surveillance, contact monitoring, and infection-prevention measures remain essential because Marburg can be severe and has no widely approved vaccine or specific treatment.

Ethiopia has formally announced the end of its first-ever Marburg virus disease outbreak, marking 42 consecutive days without new confirmed cases—the benchmark used to confirm that active transmission has stopped. The outbreak began in November 2025, and officials said strong follow-up monitoring helped ensure that any remaining chains of transmission were identified and cut off before they could expand.

The World Health Organization said it supported the national response with technical and operational assistance spanning surveillance, laboratory testing, case and infection management, logistics, and risk communication. These response “pillars” are typically critical in hemorrhagic fever outbreaks, where speed and discipline can determine whether an event remains localized or spreads.
Totals underscore severity and frontline risk
During the outbreak, Ethiopia reported 14 confirmed cases, including nine deaths and five recoveries. Authorities also recorded probable deaths and noted infections among health workers, highlighting the occupational dangers when caring for patients with highly contagious diseases and the importance of strict infection-prevention protocols.
WHO reported extensive contact identification and monitoring during the response. Tracking contacts for the full follow-up period is an intensive task, but it is a key method for catching cases early and preventing further spread.
Why continued vigilance matters
Marburg is linked to exposure to fruit bats and can spread between people via bodily fluids or contaminated materials. Symptoms may include fever, muscle pain, vomiting, and diarrhea, and severe illness can progress to significant bleeding and death. With no widely licensed vaccine or specific approved treatment, rapid detection, supportive care, and infection control remain the primary tools.
Even after an outbreak is declared over, public health agencies often maintain heightened readiness—keeping labs, clinicians, and community networks alert—because swift recognition of a new case can prevent a resurgence.
