U.S. stocks ended a recent session with mixed results as investors sorted through a wave of fourth-quarter earnings and sector moves, according to a Zacks market recap published by Nasdaq. The report said the Dow closed lower while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite finished slightly higher, even as all three major indexes still recorded weekly losses.

The recap reported that the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.6% to close at 49,098.71, while the Nasdaq Composite gained 0.3% to end at 23,501.24. The S&P 500 edged up 0.03% to 6,915.61, with seven of its 11 sectors finishing in positive territory, even as financials lagged.

The report also noted an uptick in market volatility, with the CBOE Volatility Index rising, alongside heavy trading volume compared with the recent average—signals that investors remained sensitive to earnings headlines and shifts in expectations.

Earnings: Capital One and other movers

Among the earnings results highlighted, Capital One posted adjusted earnings per share of $3.86, missing the consensus estimate of $4.12, while revenue of $15.58 billion beat expectations. The report said Capital One shares fell after the release, reflecting investor focus on profitability and credit conditions.

The same roundup cited additional company results, including Alaska Air Group and Bank First, illustrating how quarterly reports continued to drive single-stock moves even when the broader market’s direction was muted. With the earnings season underway, investors were portrayed as balancing near-term surprises against the bigger picture for growth, consumer resilience, and inflation-sensitive sectors.
